Wojtek Sawicz
I was born and raised in communist-occupied Poland. My dream was to attend Gdańsk School of Fine Arts, but life had different plans for me. I emigrated to the UK with my family, where, for many years I worked as a plumber. My early work deals with themes of censorship, patriotism and oppression. After an extended break from painting, I have now rediscovered my passion for oil painting, exploring symbolism through still life and the human form. My painting style is inspired by Polish impressionistic painters, namely Malczewski, as well as Western contemporaries such as Gaugin. I express myself through bold colour, thickly layered paint and pointillism. I encourage profound interpretation of my work, which contains existential messages below the surface of the paint.
